Carta às Mulheres - Mário Machado

Amigas e Camaradas,


Costumo usar repetidamente a expressão de que tudo o que tenhamos para dizer, já alguém o disse e melhor.Queria escrever algo para as nossas mulheres que tão fielmente nos têm acompanhado no combate nacionalista, e como dedicadas companheiras no amor e carinho que tanto precisamos.

Quando li Ramalho Ortigão, pensei - "aqui está", é mesmo isto que lhes tenho para dizer.Vocês merecem, aqui vai:

"O amor conjugal não é simplesmente um sentimento: é um culto.A posse de per si é apenas o combinado. A posse e o dever é que constituem a família. Quando a posse e o dever se desunem, para os simples amantes resta apenas a miséria; para as esposas há ainda o sacrifício, porque para elas, acima de tudo a dedicação ao objecto amado, existe o respeito ao amor.

A mulher deve acompanhar o homem à desgraça, ao infortúnio, à morte, se quiserem. Não pode acompanhá-lo à desonra nem ao mal. A obrigação da Esposa é guardar, no seu amor pelo menos, no seu próprio ser imaculado, do marido percurso alguma coisa boa, do marido infamado alguma coisa pura. Quando a posse e o dever se desunem, para os simples amantes resta apenas a miséria; para as esposas há ainda o sacrifício, porque para elas, acima de tudo a dedicação ao objecto amado, existe o respeito ao amor.

Henrique Flamenj estava condenado à morte como herege, na véspera do dia em que ele devia ser queimado os juízes propuseram-lhe o perdão a troco do simples depoimento de que não era legítima a sua mulher.

Aquele pobre homem, simples e obscuro, seria pelo facto dessa declaração restituído à sua liberdade, à sua família, à vida, ao mundo, à felicidade. Negou a declaração pedida e morreu na fogueira, preferindo à sua vida a honra da sua casa.

É este heroísmo o que devem tomar como norma da sua dedicação as mulheres heróicas.

Quando a perversidade, a desonra, a ignomínia envolvem o nome de um homem, a mulher, se não pode pelo seu afecto regenerar-lhe o coração, pode cobrir-lhe pelo menos a memória perseverando no bem. Não é inteiramente maldito aquele de quem se pode dizer depois da narração de todos os seus erros ou de todos os seus crimes: 'MAS ERA O MARIDO DE UMA TERNA E DOCE MULHER, DIGNA, PURA, CÂNDIDA E BOA' '

Letter to the Women

Dear Friends and Comrades,

I usually use repeatedly the expression of which everything what we have to say, already someone said it and better.
It wanted to write something for our women who so loyally have been accompanied us in the nacionalist combat, and like dedicated companions in the love and fondness what so much we needed.


When I read Ramalho Ortigão, I thought - ' here it is ', this is same that I have them to say.
You are worthy, here it goes:


' The conjugal love is not simply a feeling: it is a worship.
The possession for you is only the combined. The possession and the duty is that they constitute the family. When the possession and the duty are separated, for the simple lovers it remains only to misery; for the wives there is still the sacrifice, because for them, above all the dedication to the loved object, exists the respect to the love.

The woman must accompany the man to the disgrace, to the misfortune, to the death, they will be wanted. It cannot accompany it to the dishonor not even to the evil. The obligation of the Wife is to guard, in his love at least, in his immaculate being itself, of the husband distance good something, of the defamed husband pure something.When the possession and the duty are separated, for the simple lovers it remains only to misery; for the wives there is still the sacrifice, because for them, above all the dedication to the loved object, exists the respect to the love.

That poor man, simple and obscure, would be because of this declaration restored to his freedom, to his family, to the life, to the world, to the happiness. It denied the asked declaration and died in the bonfire, preferring to his life the honor of his house.

It is this heroism what the heroic women must take like standard of his dedication.

When the perversity, the dishonor, the ignominy wrap the name of a man, the woman, it is not possible for his affection to regenerate heart, it can cover at least the memory persevering in the good. That one is not completely cursed of whom it is possible to say after the narration of all his mistakes or of all his crimes: 'BUT HE WAS THE HUSBAND OF A GENTLE AND SWEET WOMAN, WORTHY, PURE, NAIVE AND GOOD ' "
